Antwerp port trials smart bracelet for social distancing

Port of Antwerp is testing a digital bracelet designed to ensure social distancing in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus at the port.

The smart device, called Romware Covid Radius, has been developed by Belgian tech company Rombit which already supplies wearables for sports uses that can warn people if vehicles are approaching.

The new software recently installed on the device can help workers at the port keep a required distance apart by giving warning signals if they come too close to each other.

The bracelet could also trace the contacts of someone who is infected in order to prevent further infection.

“Innovation and digitisation are crucial in times of crisis such as these. It is essential to keep the port operational, and to ensure that our employees can work safely. We therefore see great potential in this solution and will shortly start trials with a team of operatives,” said Port of Antwerp CEO Jacques Vandermeiren.
