MOL orders dual-fuel methanol carrier for Mitsubishi Gas Chemical charter

Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) has tapped South Korea’s Hyundai Mipo Dockyard to build a dual-fuel methanol carrier for delivery in 2025.

The Japanese shipping giant has fixed the 47,800 dwt ship on a long-term charter contract with Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company.

The vessel, which will run on either methanol or conventional heavy fuel oil, will be the first dual-fuel methanol carrier to sail under a long-term charter for a Japanese company, MOL said.

MOL delivered Japan’s first methanol carrier to Mitsubishi Gas Chemical in 1983. Today, the company operates one of the largest fleets of methanol carriers, with a total of 19 ships, five of which have methanol dual-fuel configurations.
