{"id":9668,"date":"2020-05-12T09:13:41","date_gmt":"2020-05-12T06:13:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/container-charter-market-goes-boom-to-bust-in-just-four-months\/9668\/"},"modified":"2020-05-12T09:13:41","modified_gmt":"2020-05-12T06:13:41","slug":"container-charter-market-goes-boom-to-bust-in-just-four-months","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/container-charter-market-goes-boom-to-bust-in-just-four-months\/9668\/","title":{"rendered":"Container Charter Market Goes \u2018Boom to Bust\u2019 in Just Four Months"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p>Hapag-Lloyd chief executive Rolf Habben Jansen said yesterday that the carrier would return a further \u201csmall double-digit number\u201d of ships from the 129 it has on time charters.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Representing 40% of its fleet capacity, Hapag-Lloyd\u2019s chartered fleet is relatively low compared with that of several of its carrier peers.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>MSC has some 75% of its 556-ship fleet on charter, ONE charters 68% of its 219 vessels and CMA CGM has 62% of its 474 ships on hire.<br \/>\nCarriers are withdrawing up to 20% of their network capacity on the main tradelanes and, notwithstanding that many chartered ships will have been fixed with owners on charters of 12 months or more, they will be endeavouring to redeliver as much surplus chartered tonnage as possible in the coming weeks and months.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Indeed, one carrier source told The Loadstar this week there had been a \u201cblanket ban\u201d on chartering by his European head office.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cEven feeders have to get senior approval now, which means that containers for the UK could be sitting in Rotterdam or Antwerp for weeks before another mothership brings them across.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Alphaliner said this week that idled container tonnage was getting very close to the record high of 2.46m teu, with owners increasingly struggling to find employment for their tonnage.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The consultant said demand had \u201cdried up\u201d for many of the sizes and even scrubber-fitted ships had \u201clost much of their appeal\u201d, due to the narrowing of prices between high- and low-sulphur bunker fuel.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Prior to the coronavirus crisis, the price difference between IMO 2020-compliant fuel and traditionally cheaper heavy fuel oil, able to be consumed by ships fitted with scrubbers, had settled at around $200 per ton, making the investment by owners in the exhaust gas cleaning scrubber systems an attractive option, due to the premium paid by charterers for the ships.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>But with the collapse of global oil prices, the spread has narrowed significantly, to around $40 per ton and, unsurprisingly, daily hire rates for containerships are also beginning to tumble \u2013 down an average of 8% in the past month according to the latest New ConTex index.
