{"id":9590,"date":"2020-05-11T09:06:21","date_gmt":"2020-05-11T06:06:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/u-s-navy-suffering-from-failure-in-leadership-says-nominee-to-lead-it-2\/9590\/"},"modified":"2020-05-11T09:06:21","modified_gmt":"2020-05-11T06:06:21","slug":"u-s-navy-suffering-from-failure-in-leadership-says-nominee-to-lead-it-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/u-s-navy-suffering-from-failure-in-leadership-says-nominee-to-lead-it-2\/9590\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Navy Suffering from \u2018Failure in Leadership,\u2019 Says Nominee to Lead It"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p>The United States\u00a0Navy\u00a0has been hit with a number of crises in the past year, most recently the firing of the Roosevelt\u2019s captain after the leak of a letter he wrote calling on the\u00a0Navy\u00a0for stronger measures to combat the spread of the coronavirus on the ship.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt saddens me to say that the Department of the\u00a0Navy\u00a0is in rough waters due to many factors but primarily the failure of leadership,\u201d Kenneth Braithwaite, currently U.S. envoy to Norway, told the Senate Armed Services Committee.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Braithwaite, who would be the fourth civilian to lead the\u00a0Navy\u00a0in about five months, listed several incidents in recent years, including the Roosevelt, the \u201cFat Leonard\u201d corruption scandal and deadly\u00a0Navy\u00a0ship collisions.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are all indicative of a breakdown in the trust of those leading the service,\u201d Braithwaite said, adding that he believed that the culture in the\u00a0Navy\u00a0was \u201ctarnished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>In an otherwise friendly hearing where lawmakers largely focused on more narrow issues, Democratic Senator Jack Reed said the\u00a0Navy\u2019s handling of the Roosevelt illustrated how the\u00a0Navy\u00a0was in \u201cdisarray.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>More than 1,000 sailors on the Roosevelt, currently in Guam, have tested positive for the virus and one sailor has died.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Captain Brett Crozier was fired by the\u00a0Navy\u2019s top civilian, then-acting\u00a0Navy\u00a0Secretary Thomas Modly, against the recommendations of uniformed leaders, who suggested he wait for an investigation into the letter\u2019s leak.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Modly\u2019s decision backfired badly, as members of the crew hailed their captain as a hero for risking his career out of concern for their health, in an emotional sendoff captured on video that went viral on social media.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Embarrassed, Modly then compounded his problems by flying out to the carrier to ridicule Crozier over the leak and question his character in a speech to the Roosevelt\u2019s crew, which also leaked to the media. Modly then resigned.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Modly\u2019s predecessor Richard Spencer was fired over his handling of the case of a\u00a0Navy\u00a0SEAL who was convicted of battlefield misconduct in Iraq and later won Trump\u2019s support.
