{"id":9429,"date":"2020-05-07T23:34:44","date_gmt":"2020-05-07T20:34:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/norwegian-cruise-line-secures-18-month-lifeline\/9429\/"},"modified":"2020-05-07T23:34:44","modified_gmt":"2020-05-07T20:34:44","slug":"norwegian-cruise-line-secures-18-month-lifeline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/norwegian-cruise-line-secures-18-month-lifeline\/9429\/","title":{"rendered":"Norwegian Cruise Line Secures 18-Month Lifeline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s enough to cover our cash burn under a zero-revenue environment for at least 18 months, not 12, 18 months,\u201d Del Rio told Reuters in a phone interview.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Norwegian\u2019s shares, which have lost almost 80% of their market value this year, extended intraday gains after Del Rio\u2019s remarks to trade up as much as 12% at $12.43 on the New York Stock Exchange, far outpacing a broader market rally.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The comments come a day after Norwegian completed a $2.4 billion <a href=\"https:\/\/gcaptain.com\/norwegian-cruise-line-secures-2-2-billion-in-survival-funds\/\">fundraising<\/a> through debt and equity offerings, giving the idled cruise operator needed funds to survive extended voyage suspensions due to the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo unless you want to make the case that this pandemic is going to close us down more than a year and a half into almost 2022, we believe the company is in a great financial position, has all the cash and liquidity needed to survive a prolonged lay-up and be in a position to come out strong,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Del Rio said he hopes the company will restart operations at some time in the third quarter, and that it is seeing high demand for cruises in Asia.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s larger rival, Carnival Corp, said on Monday it plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/gcaptain.com\/carnival-cruise-line-to-resume-some-sailings-in-august\/\">resume<\/a> some cruises beginning Aug. 1, pending continued efforts to coordinate with government officials.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The possibility there will be no cruises in 12 months is \u201cnear zero,\u201d Del Rio said.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>To help prepare for a resumption of business, Norwegian is consulting with former U.S. Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb to develop health protocols, which may include improving and increasing the frequency of disinfecting and cleaning, Del Rio said.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>In an interview with USA Today on March 9, Gottlieb said, \u201cIt\u2019s an awful risk to pack a lot of people on a cruise ship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The Miami-headquartered company faces proposed class-action lawsuits alleging it made false and misleading statements to the market and customers about COVID-19 \u2013 the illness caused by the novel coronavirus \u2013 and its impact on its business. The company has said the allegations are without merit.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>In March, Florida\u2019s attorney general announced an investigation related to Norwegian\u2019s marketing to customers during the coronavirus outbreak, based on allegations it downplayed the severity and highly contagious nature of the virus in an effort to sell cruises.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Other attorneys general and governmental agencies are conducting similar investigations, according to the company.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCruise ships can be among the healthiest places in the world to be during a pandemic,\u201d Del Rio said on Thursday. \u201cIt is a controlled environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Some of the earliest large COVID-19 outbreak clusters were aboard huge cruise ships in which thousands of passengers and crew were packed in tight quarters as the virus quickly spread.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>(Reporting by Helen Coster and Joshua Franklin in New York; Editing by Bill Berkrot)<\/p>\n<p>gCaptain<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cThat\u2019s enough to cover our cash burn under a zero-revenue environment for at least 18 months, not 12, 18 months,\u201d Del Rio told Reuters in a phone interview.
