They are preparing to return to port where they will undertake efforts to clean the ship,\u201d Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said in a news briefing when asked about the Reuters report.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The Kidd is believed to be the only\u00a0Navy\u00a0ship currently at sea with coronavirus cases.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt was in the Asia Pacific earlier this month when it had a coronavirus <a href=\"https:\/\/gcaptain.com\/sailors-aboard-uss-theodore-roosevelt-test-positive-for-covid-19\/\">outbreak<\/a>, forcing it to eventually dock in Guam. One sailor who was infected <a href=\"https:\/\/gcaptain.com\/uss-theodore-roosevelt-sailor-dies-after-contracting-covid-19\/\">died<\/a>, and nearly 850 out of the roughly 4,800 personnel on the carrier have tested positive for the virus.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The Roosevelt\u2019s commander had called on\u00a0Navy\u00a0leadership to evacuate the vast majority of the crew and to disinfect the ship in a letter that <a href=\"https:\/\/gcaptain.com\/sailors-do-not-need-to-die-warns-captain-of-coronavirus-hit-u-s-aircraft-carrier\/\">leaked<\/a> to the public, raising further questions about the Trump administration\u2019s handling of the outbreak.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The letter, which was obtained by a number of news outlets, set in motion a series of events that led to Captain Brett Crozier\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/gcaptain.com\/u-s-navy-relieves-commander-of-uss-theodore-roosevelt-after-letter-leak\/\">firing<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/gcaptain.com\/acting-navy-secretary-modly-resigns-amid-uproar-over-leaked-speech-to-carrier-crew\/\">resignation<\/a> of acting\u00a0Navy\u00a0Secretary Thomas Modly.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper will be meeting the chief of naval operations later on Friday to discuss the findings of an investigation into the events surrounding Crozier\u2019s firing.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The Kidd is part of the Trump administration\u2019s deployment of more\u00a0Navy\u00a0warships and aircraft to the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific to fight drug cartels.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Announcing the deployment earlier this month, the Trump administration said the additional warships and aircraft were also aimed and preventing \u201ccorrupt actors\u201d like Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro from exploiting the coronavirus pandemic to smuggle more narcotics.
