{"id":8118,"date":"2020-04-16T11:22:19","date_gmt":"2020-04-16T08:22:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/tankers-pile-up-off-europe-as-onshore-storage-hits-limit\/8118\/"},"modified":"2020-04-16T11:22:19","modified_gmt":"2020-04-16T08:22:19","slug":"tankers-pile-up-off-europe-as-onshore-storage-hits-limit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/tankers-pile-up-off-europe-as-onshore-storage-hits-limit\/8118\/","title":{"rendered":"Tankers Pile Up Off Europe as Onshore Storage Hits Limit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p>Nearly 1 million tonnes of refined products are parked on around 30 tankers off Europe\u2019s coast, Reuters calculations found.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0shipping\u00a0data and trade sources, tankers have dropped anchor near to the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) refining and storage hub and across parts of the Mediterranean as their cargo owners struggle to find buyers or storage tanks.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>While some vessels are expected to moor in ports soon, others could remain at sea for weeks because of a shortage of space left to be leased in onshore tanks, traders said.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe region is overflowing with products,\u201d one trader said on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Traders and\u00a0shipping\u00a0sources said there were long delays at tanker terminals in the ARA area, lifting costs for traders chartering the vessels.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongestion has picked up in the past few days,\u201d a\u00a0shipping\u00a0source said. \u201c(Ship chartering) deals may now be impacted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Low water levels along the Rhine river have added to logistical pressure on ARA storage. They mean barges can only be loaded to 50% of capacity, limiting how much they can take to storage sites along the river.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Most of the vessels are carrying jet fuel, gasoline and naphtha, often blended into gasoline, all of which have seen a massive drop in demand after restrictions on movement around the world to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>At least three are carrying diesel, according to the data.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Two tankers \u2013 Stena Polaris and Andrea Victory \u2013 have been leased in recent weeks by BP to store fueloffshore\u00a0for two to three months are anchored off the east coast of England, Refinitiv data showed.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>BP declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Refineries around the world have reduced their operations and in some cases shut down. As a result, several European refiners have been unable to unload crude oil cargoes.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Consultants Rystad Energy forecast oil demand in Europe in 2020 falling by 2.3 million barrels per day to 12.7 million bpd, an 11.2% decline from 2019\u2019s 14.3 million bpd.
