{"id":7927,"date":"2020-04-14T01:49:30","date_gmt":"2020-04-13T22:49:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/founder-of-royal-caribbean-cruises-dies-at-90\/7927\/"},"modified":"2020-04-14T01:49:30","modified_gmt":"2020-04-13T22:49:30","slug":"founder-of-royal-caribbean-cruises-dies-at-90","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/founder-of-royal-caribbean-cruises-dies-at-90\/7927\/","title":{"rendered":"Founder of Royal Caribbean Cruises dies at 90"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p><strong> Arne Alexander Wilhelmsen, a founder of\u00a0Royal\u00a0Caribbean\u00a0Cruises died\u00a0on Saturday, April 11, 2020, in Palma,\u00a0Spain, at 90-years old.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wilhelmsen was a constant influence on the company from its founding, serving more than three decades on the company&#8217;s board of directors.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.offshorewind.biz\/file\/sites\/6\/2020\/04\/13133407\/Oasis_of_the_Seas.png\" alt=\"Oasis of the Seas\" class=\"wp-image-275613\" \/><figcaption>Source: Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCL) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>&#8220;At a time when the rest of the world thought cruising was a niche use for old transatlantic liners, Arne was already seeing glimmers of the growth that was possible,&#8221; <\/em>said\u00a0<strong>Richard Fain, RCL&#8217;s chairman and CEO<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;He had a vision of the modern cruise industry when the &#8216;industry&#8217; might have been a dozen used ships, total.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Born on&nbsp;June 15, 1929, in&nbsp;Oslo, Norway, Wilhelmsen earned his MBA at&nbsp;Harvard Business School&nbsp;and worked as a chartering assistant for&nbsp;Norway&#8217;s&nbsp;EB Lund &amp; Co. and later as a shipbroker in&nbsp;New York. After joining the family business in 1954, he became its president in 1961.&nbsp;The scion of a leading Norwegian shipping concern \u2013&nbsp;Anders Wilhelmsen&nbsp;&amp; Co AS \u2013 he spent most of his life in the family business, including an early stint as a deckhand.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Arne was a steady presence and source of wisdom on our board for decades,&#8221;<\/em> Fain said. <\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;And in 2003, when he was ready to step back, he was succeeded on the RCL board by his son, Alex, who has carried the involvement of the Wilhelmsen family in charting our company&#8217;s course into its sixth decade.
