The order covers the import of regular milled and well-milled rice and excludes varieties not commonly produced locally.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Under the President&#8217;s directive, the two-month import suspension will be extended,&#8221; the Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro told a press briefing.<\/p>\n<p>The<span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Philippines<\/span>, one of the world&#8217;s largest rice importers,\u00a0shipped\u00a0in 4.8 million metric\u00a0tons\u00a0of rice last year, mostly from Vietnam and Thailand.<\/p>\n<p>Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel has said he plans to recommend to the president\u00a0that the moratorium should be extended\u00a0by\u00a0another\u00a015 to 30 days, and that the ministry was also looking at increasing tariffs on imported rice.<\/p>\n<p>The annual rate of increase in rice prices in the<span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Philippines\u00a0<\/span>hit a 15-year high of 24.4% in March last year, but has since reversed course and declined\u00a0by 17%\u00a0in August.
