{"id":5961,"date":"2020-03-09T23:17:20","date_gmt":"2020-03-09T20:17:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/celebrity-edge-sets-sail-with-first-all-female-cruise-crew\/5961\/"},"modified":"2020-03-09T23:17:20","modified_gmt":"2020-03-09T20:17:20","slug":"celebrity-edge-sets-sail-with-first-all-female-cruise-crew","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/celebrity-edge-sets-sail-with-first-all-female-cruise-crew\/5961\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrity Edge Sets Sail with First All-Female Cruise Crew"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>For the first time in maritime history, an all-female bridge and onboard leadership team set sail on March 8, commemorating International Women\u2019s Day.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Led by Captain Kate McCue, the first American female cruise ship captain, who was accompanied by 26 other women representing 16 different countries, <a href=\"https:\/\/worldmaritimenews.com\/archives\/264040\/celebrity-edge-delivered-heads-for-florida\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the cruise ship Celebrity Edge<\/a> sailed out of Port Everglades and began its seven-day Caribbean journey.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Retiring Pilot Boat Captain Cheryl Phipps, one of only a few female pilot boat captains in the country, led the ship out to sea.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Around the world, <a href=\"https:\/\/worldmaritimenews.com\/archives\/286083\/wmu-president-industry-is-not-doing-enough-to-empower-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">only 2% of the world\u2019s mariners<\/a> are women. Cruise line Celebrity Cruises made it a priority to #BRIDGEthegap, leading the maritime industry into a more diverse future and growing the number of women on their bridge teams from 3% to nearly 25% over the last few years.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cTo \u2018man the bridge\u2019 with 100% women and to fill every leadership role on board with women is truly significant. I am so proud of these accomplished women, who worked tirelessly to be the best person for the job in a traditionally male-dominated industry and I am honored to work alongside them,\u201d <\/em>Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, president and CEO, Celebrity Cruises, commented.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><em> \u201cAdvancing gender equality in our industry takes a purposeful and focused commitment because it is not easy. This is such meaningful progress and we\u2019re just getting started.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The 117,000 gross ton Celebrity Edge debuted back in 2018 and <a href=\"https:\/\/worldmaritimenews.com\/archives\/266061\/nobel-prize-winner-malala-names-celebrity-edge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">was named<\/a> by Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai.
