{"id":5169,"date":"2020-02-25T21:07:25","date_gmt":"2020-02-25T18:07:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/costa-cruises-lng-fueled-flagship-named-in-savona\/5169\/"},"modified":"2020-02-25T21:07:25","modified_gmt":"2020-02-25T18:07:25","slug":"costa-cruises-lng-fueled-flagship-named-in-savona","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/costa-cruises-lng-fueled-flagship-named-in-savona\/5169\/","title":{"rendered":"Costa Cruises\u2019 LNG-Fueled Flagship Named in Savona"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Costa Smeralda, a new LNG-powered flagship owned by Italian cruise line Costa Cruises, was named in Savona, Italy, on February 22.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The ship\u2019s godmother was international celebrity Pen\u00e9lope Cruz, who performed the ribbon-cutting duties with the traditional breaking of the bottle against the bow of the ship in the presence of the Master of Costa Smeralda, Paolo Benini.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/worldmaritimenews.com\/archives\/287491\/meyer-turku-hands-over-costa-smeralda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Delivered<\/a> to Costa Cruises by Finnish shipbuilder Meyer Turku in December last year, the ship has been described as a <em>\u201ctravelling smart city\u201d<\/em> where sustainable technologies and circular economy concepts are applied to reduce the environmental footprint and support sustainable cruising.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>With its technological propulsion system based on LNG, the most advanced fuel technology currently available to reduce emissions, the cruise ship is able to virtually eliminate sulfur dioxide emissions and particulate matter while greatly reducing emissions of nitrogen oxides and CO2. On board, special desalinisation plants process seawater directly to meet daily water supply requirements, and energy consumption is reduced to a minimum thanks to an intelligent energy management system.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt is a pleasure to officially welcome Costa Smeralda to our fleet,\u201d<\/em> Michael Thamm, Group CEO of Costa Group, which includes Costa, Germany\u2019s brand, AIDA Cruises, and Carnival Asia, said.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c(W)e are committed to being the first to introduce environmental innovation and lead the way in sustainable cruising for the cruise industry. We were the first company to invest in LNG and we are currently working to develop other sustainable technologies such as battery storage, fuel cells and liquefied gas from renewable energy sources.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The Costa Group was the first cruise operator in the world to pioneer the LNG propulsion system and has ordered a total of five new LNG-fueled ships, two of which \u2013 Costa Smeralda and <a href=\"https:\/\/worldmaritimenews.com\/archives\/266624\/aidanova-worlds-1st-lng-cruise-ship-delivered\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AIDAnova<\/a> \u2013 are already in service.
