{"id":4339,"date":"2020-01-20T18:30:36","date_gmt":"2020-01-20T15:30:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/?p=4339"},"modified":"2020-01-20T18:30:38","modified_gmt":"2020-01-20T15:30:38","slug":"maersk-ceo-eu-antitrust-rules-hurt-european-companies-competitiveness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/maersk-ceo-eu-antitrust-rules-hurt-european-companies-competitiveness\/4339\/","title":{"rendered":"Maersk CEO: EU Antitrust Rules Hurt European Companies\u2019 Competitiveness"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Current competition rules in Europe prevent the creation of giant EU companies that would be able to compete with US and Chinese rivals, S\u00f8ren Skou, CEO of Danish shipping major Maersk, warned.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In an interview with Danish business magazine\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/finans.dk\/erhverv\/ECE11872987\/maersktopchef-soeren-skou-gaar-i-rette-med-margrethe-vestager-om-europaeiske-konkurrenceregler\/?ctxref=ext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Finans<\/a>, Skou explained that\u00a0EU competition rules need to\u00a0be interpreted in light of the new economic and geopolitical reality.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to Maersk CEO, in the long run, it will hurt consumers if we don\u2019t modernize and adjust the way we interpret the EU competition rules and the economic concepts to that reality so that EU companies can better compete on equal terms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">His comments were confirmed to World Maritime News by a Maersk spokesperson. The comments follow last year\u2019s decision by the European Commission to block the merger between the French Alstom and German Siemens, Europe\u2019s largest suppliers in the rail market. The decision has hurt the duo\u2019s competitiveness, taking into account the rise of China\u2019s player in this sector, CRRC.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Skou is a member of the European Round Table for Industry (ERT), a group comprising chairs and CEOs of 55 of Europe\u2019s leading multinational companies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a recently released industrial strategy paper entitled\u00a0<em>\u201cTurning Global Challenges into Opportunities\u201d,<\/em>\u00a0the leaders of these companies have called for smart policies to enhance competitiveness, strengthen innovation and ensure that European companies can thrive in an increasingly complex world whilst creating value for society.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The recommendations included in the paper come at the same time as a new ERT report \u2014\u00a0<em>\u201cthe Competitiveness and Industry Benchmarking Report 2019\u201d<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 highlights how significantly the EU is falling behind other major economies on key indicators of economic performance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The latest wave of mergers in the container shipping sector \u2014 including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/worldmaritimenews.com\/archives\/236709\/maersk-line-closes-hamburg-sud-acquisition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maersk\u2019s acquisition of Hamburg S\u00fcd<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 has been cleared in the European Union.
