{"id":3873,"date":"2019-11-28T19:26:24","date_gmt":"2019-11-28T16:26:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/?p=3873"},"modified":"2019-11-28T19:26:26","modified_gmt":"2019-11-28T16:26:26","slug":"cma-cgm-concludes-biofuel-tests-with-ikea-goodshipping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/cma-cgm-concludes-biofuel-tests-with-ikea-goodshipping\/3873\/","title":{"rendered":"CMA CGM Concludes Biofuel Tests with IKEA, GoodShipping"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>French container shipping major CMA CGM, the GoodShipping Program and IKEA Transport &amp; Logistics Services have successfully completed their 2019 biofuel test\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/worldmaritimenews.com\/archives\/272953\/cma-cgm-containership-to-test-sustainable-marine-biofuel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">program<\/a>\u00a0on CMA CGM vessels.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The completion follows positive trials of heavy fuel oil (HFO) equivalent (HFO) biofuel oil (BFO) during CMA CGM Alexander von Humboldt\u2019s North Europe-Asia trip, which occurred in September and October 2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This latest development follows\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/worldmaritimenews.com\/archives\/273740\/cma-cgm-boxship-refueled-with-sustainable-marine-biofuel-in-rotterdam-port\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the world premiere refueling<\/a>\u00a0of a containership with sustainable biofuel, when the CMA CGM White Shark took on the bunker during a call at the Port of Rotterdam in March 2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Under the trial, sustainable BFO was used in a blend with conventional fossil-based marine fuels to power a vessel on a major oceangoing route. Both applications of the BFO showed a positive result, thus proving the technical compatibility of sustainable marine biofuels.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cThese developments demonstrate the viability of advanced biofuels to meet current and future environmental regulations and emissions reductions targets, delivering a more sustainable shipping industry,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>CMA CGM, GoodShipping Program and IKEA said in a joint statement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201c(W)e are resolutely committed to environmental protection and the energy transition\u2026These landmark trials give the maritime sector a vital demonstration into the scalability, sustainability and technical compliance of marine biofuel oil,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>Xavier Leclercq, Vice President \u2013 CMA Ships, CMA CGM Group, commented.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The BFO trialed by CMA CGM across both vessels was supplied by GoodFuels and is said to be the first-ever HFO-equivalent biofuel. All GoodFuels sustainable marine fuels are virtually SOx free and deliver 80-90% well-to-propeller CO2 reduction versus fossil equivalents.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The announcement comes at a time when the industry is under increasing scrutiny to improve its sustainability and move towards decarbonization. With scalability, BFO future-proofs requirements for shipowners and operators to comply with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/worldmaritimenews.com\/archives\/249498\/imo-members-agree-on-50-pct-ghg-emissions-cut\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">future regulations on carbon reduction<\/a>\u00a0by 2030 and 2050.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The trials were achieved through IKEA Transport &amp; Logistics Services\u2019 participation in the GoodShipping Program, the world\u2019s first decarbonization initiative for cargo owners.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cIt is only through collaboration and partnerships between major players \u2013 including cargo owners, ship operators and solution providers \u2013 that we can achieve real change at fast pace,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>Elisabeth Munck af Rosensch\u00f6ld, Head of Sustainability, IKEA Global Transport &amp; Logistics Services, pointed out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cWe need a diversified portfolio of solutions to achieve our ambitious emissions reduction targets \u2013 and marine biofuels are an important part of the puzzle going forward for our sector.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The GoodShipping Program works on the premise that, as all CO2 from shipping is emitted into the same atmosphere, the means of mitigating these emissions is equally impactful, regardless of which vessels adopt biofuels over traditional bunker fuels \u2013 or the amount of \u2018drop in\u2019 biofuel that is added to the fuel tank, as long as it offsets the CO2 costs of transporting participating shippers\u2019 cargo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As explained, this flexible approach provides far greater scope for immediate impact while having the same net effect in averting the effects of climate change.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cThe success of this test programme with IKEA and CMA CGM builds further evidence of the important role that biofuel oil will play in the marine fuel mix, and proves that initiatives already exist on the market for cargo owners to realise their decarbonisation goals,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Dirk Kronemeijer, CEO of The GoodShipping Program, concluded.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"post_share_buttons\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>French container shipping major CMA CGM, the GoodShipping Program and IKEA Transport &amp; Logistics Services have successfully completed their 2019 biofuel test\u00a0program\u00a0on CMA CGM vessels.
