{"id":34320,"date":"2023-07-20T13:01:26","date_gmt":"2023-07-20T10:01:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/canada-dockworkers-call-off-strike\/34320\/"},"modified":"2023-07-20T13:01:26","modified_gmt":"2023-07-20T10:01:26","slug":"canada-dockworkers-call-off-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/canada-dockworkers-call-off-strike\/34320\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada dockworkers call off strike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-content entry clearfix\">\n<div class=\"mailmunch-forms-before-post\" style=\"display: none !important;\"><\/div>\n<p>Canadian west coast dockworkers have revoked a strike notice issued for Saturday following a crisis meeting by the country\u2019s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.<\/p>\n<p>The strike notice withdrawn had been issued earlier Wednesday, just hours after the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/splash247.com\/canada-dockworkers-ordered-to-end-strike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canada Industrial Relations Board<\/a><\/span> ruled the workers\u2019 renewed strike was illegal because there was no 72-hour notice.<\/p>\n<p>The strike that had shut down British Columbia\u2019s ports for days resumed Tuesday after the union representing over 7,000 dockworkers <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/splash247.com\/canada-port-strike-resumes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">voted down <\/a><\/span>a tentative four-year deal agreed with employers last week.<\/p>\n<p>The labour watchdog, however, ordered on Wednesday that any member of the union who was participating in strike activity \u201cimmediately perform the duties of their employment as per the collective agreement and applicable dispatch rules\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This was shortly followed by a new strike notice from the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Canada, sparking concerns that the province\u2019s ports could be shut down again by Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>The industrial action is estimated to have frozen billions of dollars worth of cargo from moving in and out of ports, including at Canada\u2019s busiest, Vancouver.<\/p>\n<p>In response to a potential new crisis and mounting calls for resolute government action to end the strike, Trudeau convened a cabinet committee on the same day.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mailmunch-forms-in-post-middle\" style=\"display: none !important;\"><\/div>\n<p>The Prime Minister\u2019s Office said in a statement that Trudeau had stressed the critical importance of operations at the ports resuming as soon as possible, adding that workers and employers across Canada cannot face further disruptions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked ministers and senior officials their advice toward achieving this goal and directed them to pursue all available options to ensure the stability of our supply chains and to protect Canadian jobs and our economy,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>In a joint statement, Canada\u2019s labour minister, Seamus O\u2019Regan and transport minister, Omar Alghabra, said earlier on Wednesday: \u201cWe have been patient. We have respected the collective bargaining process. But we need our ports operating.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The ILWU Canada reversed course and revoked its fresh strike notice late Wednesday, citing no reason.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEffective immediately the strike notice dated July 22 for 9:00 am has now been removed,\u201d the union said in a statement.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"ag\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This afternoon, I convened the Incident Response Group to address the labour disruption at BC\u2019s ports \u2013 because workers and employers across Canada cannot face further disruption.
