The Port of Gothenburg is buying into an offshore wind power project, that will be able to generate renewable electricity corresponding to the current electricity consumption of the second-largest city in Sweden.<\/p>\n
Under the agreement with developer Eolus, Gothenburg port will acquire 5% of the shares in the project company that owns V\u00e4stvind, with Eolus keeping the remaining 95%.<\/p>\n
The port is facing a green transformation that will entail a sharp increase in its electricity needs already during the period up until 2030. The port\u2019s forecasts for future electricity consumption show a multi-fold increase in the need for power.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe world\u2019s major ports will become energy hubs and centers for the manufacture of hydrogen gas and e-fuel for maritime traffic. The Port of Gothenburg\u2019s strategy is to lead the green transition of maritime traffic, but this position will not come about without some effort. Access to green electricity will be entirely crucial for the port\u2019s development and competitiveness. Investing in offshore wind power is therefore a strategic decision for us,\u201d says Elvir Dzanic, CEO of the Gothenburg Port Authority.<\/p>\n
The V\u00e4stvind wind farm would be situated in the municipalities of Kung\u00e4lv and \u00d6cker\u00f6, as well as in the Swedish economic zone. The wind farm is expected to have installed capacity of 1 GW and the potential to generate up to 4.5 TWh of renewable electricity every year. The plan is to submit the permit application this year and if approved start the construction in 2027, and completion for 2029.<\/p>\n
