With the help of the\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.xeneta.com\/products\/cei\"><strong><em>Carbon Emissions Index (CEI)<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em>, a tool from Xeneta and Marine Benchmark, carriers have been assessed on the main Far East to South America East Coast container corridor. With first results out, <strong>Hamburg S\u00fcd is likely celebrating;\u00a0<\/strong>Evergreen, likely not.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the latest analysis, the <strong>CO2 emitted per ton of cargo<\/strong> from the Far East to the East Coast of South America <strong>rose by 6.3% (quarter-on-quarter) in Q4 2022<\/strong>. This leaves the trade with a CEI of 96.6, its highest tally since Q3 2021 and the highest CEI of all the five major corridors out of the Far East.<\/p>\n<p>The scores of individual carriers were \u201cvery mixed\u201d with clear winners and others, he says, \u201cthat would benefit from doubling down on their efforts,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/peter-sand-0983084\/\"><strong>Peter Sand, Chief Analyst, Xeneta<\/strong><\/a>. \u201cEnvironmental performance has never been more important, both from a \u2018green\u2019 and a commercial perspective, with shippers, regulators, financiers and other stakeholders paying close attention. With that in mind,<strong>\u00a0Hamburg S\u00fcd will be very happy to record the lowest CEI on the trade<\/strong>, registering 76.2. This means a ton of cargo sailing on a ship operated by Hamburg S\u00fcd emitted over 20% less CO2 than an average ton on this trade. A great result.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib\" style=\"width: 913px; width: 913px;\"><span class=\"fr-img-wrap\"><span class=\"fr-inner\">The Loser: &#8220;Evergreen was the worst performer amongst the top six carriers over the quarter,\u201d according to Xeneta&#8217;s Carbon Emissions Index (CEI) tool. Copyright Asvolas\/AdobeStock<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The low score, Sand explains, is due to Hamburg S\u00fcd\u2019s sailing of \u201crelatively slow steaming\u201d, larger-than-average ships on this trade. Amongst other \u201cstar performers\u201d were <strong>ONE<\/strong>, scoring 82.2, and <strong>Hapag Lloyd,<\/strong> registering 84.3. <strong><em>[Looking at historical figures, Hapag Lloyd actually emerges as the most carbon-efficient carrier on this trade in the past five years.]<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately for them,<strong>\u00a0the CEI data shows that Evergreen was the worst performer<\/strong> amongst the top six carriers over the quarter,\u201d said Sand, adding that the Taiwanese group logged a score of 109.7. \u201cSomewhat counterintuitively, Evergreen actually had the highest filling factor on the trade \u2013 whereas Hamburg S\u00fcd\u2019s was lower than average \u2013 however, its smaller, less carbon efficient vessels took a toll on the overall score.
