{"id":3203,"date":"2019-10-02T13:59:01","date_gmt":"2019-10-02T10:59:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/?p=3203"},"modified":"2019-10-02T13:59:03","modified_gmt":"2019-10-02T10:59:03","slug":"golden-ray-lightering-ops-continue-divers-working-to-secure-spill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/golden-ray-lightering-ops-continue-divers-working-to-secure-spill\/3203\/","title":{"rendered":"Golden Ray Lightering Ops Continue, Divers Working to Secure Spill"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Salvage workers have removed over 106,101 gallons of fuel from the capsized car carrier Golden Ray as of October 1, according to the United States Coast Guard.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following earlier reports of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/worldmaritimenews.com\/archives\/283627\/oil-leaking-from-overturned-car-carrier-near-brunswick\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">oil discharge<\/a>, the St. Simons Sound Incident Unified Command (UC) deployed divers to locate and secure the source of the spill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Skimming vessels continued to recover oil from the water while survey teams monitor shoreline impacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The officials added that the operations to lighter the vessel are ongoing. The UC has 14,700 feet of containment boom deployed to protect sensitive areas, while cleanup personnel and equipment&nbsp;<em>\u201care strategically staged and ready to respond to any impacted shoreline.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe Unified Command has maintained a posture to be able to rapidly respond to any discharges from the vessel, including by skimming, booming, and shoreline cleanup,\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;said Chris Graff of Gallagher Marine Systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWe\u2019re now using these preparations to implement a rapid and thorough cleanup of impacted areas.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specialists continue to actively monitor air and water quality around the vessel, Jekyll Island, and St. Simons Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cDepartment of Natural Resources and the entire Unified Command are deeply concerned by any pollution impacts.
