{"id":28468,"date":"2021-12-11T02:45:18","date_gmt":"2021-12-10T23:45:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/marad-awards-12-6%e2%80%afmillion-in-grants-for-us%e2%80%afmarine-highways\/28468\/"},"modified":"2021-12-11T02:45:18","modified_gmt":"2021-12-10T23:45:18","slug":"marad-awards-12-6%e2%80%afmillion-in-grants-for-us%e2%80%afmarine-highways","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/marad-awards-12-6%e2%80%afmillion-in-grants-for-us%e2%80%afmarine-highways\/28468\/","title":{"rendered":"MARAD Awards $12.6\u202fMillion in Grants for US\u202fMarine Highways"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div itemprop=\"text\">\n<p>The\u202fU.S. Department of Transportation\u2019s Maritime Administration\u202f(MARAD) awarded $12.6\u202fmillion in grants to\u202fnine\u202fmarine highway projects across the\u202fNation under\u202fthe\u202fAmerica\u2019s Marine Highway Program (AMHP).\u202fThe funding\u202fwill\u202fhelp address supply chain disruptions, enhance the movement of goods along our navigable waterways, and expand existing waterborne freight services in\u202fDelaware, Hawaii,\u202fIndiana, Kentucky, Louisiana,\u202fNorth Carolina,\u202fNew York,\u202fNew Jersey, Tennessee,\u202fTexas,\u202fand\u202fVirginia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese investments through the America\u2019s Marine Highway Program\u202fwill help us move more goods, more quickly and more efficiently,\u201d said U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg. \u201cIn this moment of record demand for goods and shipping, this is an important piece of the Administration\u2019s Port Action Plan to strengthen supply chains, modernize port operations, and lower the cost of goods for American families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By announcing these America\u2019s Marine Highway Program awards now, the Department is making good on a promise in the Biden-Harris Port Action Plan to deliver near-term actions to address supply chain disruptions by helping to increase Federal flexibilities for port grants; accelerate port infrastructure grant awards; initiate new construction projects for coastal navigation, inland waterways, and land ports of entry; and launch the first round of expanded port infrastructure grants funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.<\/p>\n<p>The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law provides an additional $25 million to support marine highway projects and to increase the use of our Nation\u2019s waterways. The funding in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law for the Port Infrastructure Development Program is roughly the same amount that has been invested in port infrastructure in total from all DOT-administered grant programs since federal investments in ports began.<\/p>\n<p>The\u202fAMHP\u202fpromotes the increased use of the Nation\u2019s navigable waterways to\u202frelieve\u202flandside congestion,\u202fsupport\u202fnew and\u202fmore\u202fefficient transportation options, and\u202fenhance performance\u202fof the surface transportation system. The program works with public and private stakeholders to achieve these goals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerica\u2019s Marine Highway Program\u202fis an innovative program that\u202fencourages\u202fthe use of America\u2019s navigable waterways for the movement of freight and people as an alternative to land-based\u202ftransportation,\u201d said Acting Maritime Administrator Lucinda Lessley. \u201cThe funding announced today advances our ongoing efforts to help new marine highway services begin operation and to improve existing services.\u201d\u202f<\/p>\n<p>Since its inception, the AMHP has designated 52 Marine Highway Projects, bolstering jobs and local economies. Since 2016, MARAD has received $44.6\u202fmillion in funding for grants under the AMHP. A total of\u202f24\u202feligible marine highway projects have\u202freceived AMHP grants to further improve the transportation system and national security by adding to the Nation\u2019s strategic sealift resources and providing transportation alternatives, including during times of disaster or national emergency.\u202f<\/p>\n<p>All Marine Highway Grants award recipients must apply, comply with, and implement all provisions of the Buy American Act. Grant funds can be used to purchase low-emission U.S. manufactured equipment, such as container reach stackers and cranes, manufactured with American components and labor. These funds can also support U.S. shipyards to support the construction, modification, and purchase of American-made barges.<\/p>\n<p>Projects receiving funding are:\u202f<\/p>\n<p><strong>Delaware\u202fand New Jersey &#8211; Cape May \u2013 Lewes Ferry\u202f(awarded $600,000)<\/strong><br \/>Project sponsor: Delaware River and Bay Authority. This\u202fgrant will\u202fsupport\u202fa comprehensive ferry master plan\u202fto\u202fdevelop a new, modern,\u202fefficient, and cleaner\u202fferryboat design.\u202fThe master plan will serve as a comprehensive analysis of operations\u202fand\u202fservice needs,\u202fand\u202fhelp\u202fdetermine the types, sizes, and number of ferries that are needed in the future. With a nationwide\u202fpush towards a low carbon economy transition, the ferry system\u202fis capable of incorporating technologies within the vessels that can benefit customers as well as the environment, including electric vehicle charging stations.\u202f<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hawaii &#8211; Hawaii Commercial Harbors System Shipping Services\u202f(awarded $200,475)<\/strong><br \/>Sponsored by\u202fYoung Brothers, LLC, the grant funds will be used to purchase\u202f99\u202fforklift scales to enhance the newly designated Hawaii Commercial Harbors System Shipping Services Project. The scales will improve the safety and efficiency of Young Brother\u2019s inter-island cargo operations by providing real-time weight information for cargo being transported. Currently, weight information is provided by the shipper.\u202f<\/p>\n<p><strong>Indiana\u202fand Kentucky &#8211; M-70 Barge Service in the Ports of Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky and Beyond (awarded $1,408,000)<\/strong><br \/>Sponsored by\u202fNucor Corporation, grant funds will support the acquisition of a Buy American-compliant bridge crane at the new marine terminal in Gallatin County, Ky. This site will transport steel products by inland river barge. The purchase of the new crane will be designed to lift 70 tons to meet market demand.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Louisiana and Tennessee &#8211; Baton Rouge-New Orleans Shuttle Service (awarded $847,500)<\/strong><br \/>Sponsored by SEACOR AMH,\u202fthis\u202fgrant\u202fwill fund the purchase of 100\u202fcontainer chassis;\u202fsupport\u202fmodification to the towboat wheelhouse;\u202fand\u202fenable\u202fone bareboat lease of a new 2520 horsepower Z-Drive towboat with Tier 3 engines.\u202fFunding for\u202fthis\u202fproject\u202fwill support the continued growth of the Memphis, Tenn.\u202fto Port Allen, La.\u202fcontainer shuttle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>North Carolina &#8211; North Carolina Container on Barge Shuttle Operation\u202f(awarded $1,015,000)<\/strong><br \/>Sponsored by\u202fStevens Towing of North Carolina, grant\u202ffunds\u202fwere awarded\u202ffor\u202fan\u202fEquipment Upgrade Project,\u202fwhich includes the purchase of a crawler crane, two spreader bars,\u202fand a forklift.\u202fCurrently, containerized cargo bound for the Port of Virginia from Edenton must reach its destination via truck, causing high amounts of volume on North Carolina and Virginia roadways. This service will run between\u202fRiverbulk\u202fTerminal in Edenton, N.C.,\u202fto locations within the Port of Virginia, and operate utilizing a 200 TEU capacity deck barge for Lo\/Lo cargo and\/or Ro\/Ro cargo.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New\u202fJersey\u202f- Mid-Atlantic Barge Service\u202f(awarded $1,010,800)<\/strong><br \/>Sponsored by the South Jersey Port Corporation, this project will\u202facquire two American-made, low-emissions reach stackers for the Balzano Marine Terminal at the Port of Camden, N.J.\u202fThese fully mobile reach stackers will be utilized\u202fterminal wide.\u202fUsing\u202fthese reach stackers, the Balzano Marine Terminal is expected to increase densification and throughput, creating a more resilient system of transport at the terminal.\u202f<\/p>\n<p><strong>New York and New Jersey\u202f- New York Harbor Container and Trailer-on-Barge Service (awarded $1,470,000)<\/strong><br \/>Sponsored by Red Hook Container Terminal, LLC., this project\u202fwill be used to\u202fmodify a deck barge to begin the Trailer-on-Barge Package Delivery Service of the New York Harbor Container &amp; Trailer on Barge Service.
