{"id":2442,"date":"2019-07-24T05:02:29","date_gmt":"2019-07-24T05:02:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/?p=2442"},"modified":"2019-07-24T05:02:31","modified_gmt":"2019-07-24T05:02:31","slug":"intercargo-raises-safety-concerns-over-2020-fuel-switch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/intercargo-raises-safety-concerns-over-2020-fuel-switch\/2442\/","title":{"rendered":"INTERCARGO Raises Safety Concerns Over 2020 Fuel Switch"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>With just five months to go until the IMO 2020 sulphur cap, the&nbsp;International Association of Dry Cargo Shipowners has expressed its concern over the availability of safe compliant fuels and the industry\u2019s preparedness considering the magnitude of the challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>INTERCARGO says the global availability of 2020-compliant fuels remains a key question is still largely unanswered, adding that the switch to .5% sulphur fuel marks a \u2018sea change\u2019 in the bunker supply chain, as well as for ships\u2019 crews who will be on the front lines of the switch.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under&nbsp;Annex VI of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL Convention), from 1 January 2020 the global limit for sulphur content in ship fuel will be limited to .5%, down significantly from the 3.5% sulphur limit currently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is extremely worrying that compliant fuels have so far been made available only in a limited number of ports and under unfavourable terms for voluntary early testing by ships, as Charterers\/Operators are not currently obliged to purchase future compliant fuel,\u201d INTERCARGO said in a statement. \u201cHence, the practical testing of new fuels and crew training, which is only possible under real conditions aboard ships, is very limited and pushed to the end of year \u2013 this situation creates significant safety implications for the operation of ships, which could eventually threaten the safety of seafarers, ships, and cargoes, as well as the marine environment.\u201d<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With just five months to go until the IMO 2020 sulphur cap, the&nbsp;International Association of Dry Cargo Shipowners has expressed its concern over the availability of safe compliant fuels and the industry\u2019s preparedness considering the magnitude of the challenge.
