{"id":20671,"date":"2020-11-04T02:35:48","date_gmt":"2020-11-03T23:35:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/abb-to-provide-icebreaking-propulsion-to-fleet-of-newbuild-lng-carriers\/20671\/"},"modified":"2020-11-04T02:35:48","modified_gmt":"2020-11-03T23:35:48","slug":"abb-to-provide-icebreaking-propulsion-to-fleet-of-newbuild-lng-carriers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/abb-to-provide-icebreaking-propulsion-to-fleet-of-newbuild-lng-carriers\/20671\/","title":{"rendered":"ABB to provide icebreaking propulsion to fleet of newbuild LNG carriers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>Finland-based technology company ABB has won a contract worth over $300 million from Daewoo Shipbuilding &amp; Marine Engineering to supply a power and propulsion package for six new LNG transport vessels along the Northern Sea Route.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ABB said on Monday that each of the six newbuild vessels would<br \/>\nfeature a trio of the largest and most powerful Azipod propulsion units ever<br \/>\nsupplied for ships operating in ice.<\/p>\n<p>Together, the giant 17 MW Azipod units will provide a total<br \/>\npower of 51 MW \u2013 68,400 BHP \u2013 enabling the vessels to navigate safely through<br \/>\nice up to 2.1-meter thick. In similar conditions, comparable ships without this<br \/>\nABB system would require icebreaker assistance.<\/p>\n<p>The Azipod propulsion system, where the electric drive motor<br \/>\nis in a submerged pod outside the ship hull, can rotate 360 degrees to boost<br \/>\nmanoeuvrability, which is particularly crucial for vessels operating in ice.<br \/>\nThe new LNG carriers will be classed to ARC7 \u2013 the highest ice class rating for<br \/>\nmerchant vessels.<\/p>\n<p>The order follows the successful delivery of ABB\u2019s<br \/>\nleading-edge technology for the 15-ship series servicing the Yamal LNG project<br \/>\n\u2013 one of the largest orders ever for ABB Marine &amp; Ports, completed in 2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Juha Koskela<\/strong>, division president of ABB Marine &amp; Ports, said: \u201c<em>We are proud to see our technology to be once again chosen for demanding operations in the Arctic.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>We are committed to supporting the growing Arctic maritime industries with our unparalleled technology that has over the years proven to enable safe, sustainable operations and ensures year-round transportation of cargoes across the Northern Sea Route<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Upon delivery starting from 2023, the six vessels will<br \/>\nservice Arctic LNG 2 \u2013 one of the largest industrial projects in the Arctic \u2013<br \/>\nand will each have the capacity to transport 170,000 cbm of LNG.<\/p>\n<p>So far, ABB has delivered electric propulsion systems to<br \/>\nover 90 icebreakers or ice-going vessels with Azipod propulsion spans ranging<br \/>\nfrom 1MW to 22MW.<\/p>\n<p>The post <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.offshore-energy.biz\/abb-to-provide-icebreaking-propulsion-to-fleet-of-newbuild-lng-carriers\/\">ABB to provide icebreaking propulsion to fleet of newbuild LNG carriers<\/a> appeared first on <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.offshore-energy.biz\">Offshore Energy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>world maritime news<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Finland-based technology company ABB has won a contract worth over $300 million from Daewoo Shipbuilding &amp; Marine Engineering to supply a power and propulsion package for six new LNG transport vessels along the Northern Sea Route.
