{"id":1758,"date":"2019-05-07T06:51:23","date_gmt":"2019-05-07T06:51:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/?p=1758"},"modified":"2019-05-07T06:51:26","modified_gmt":"2019-05-07T06:51:26","slug":"msc-interoperability-crucial-for-container-shipping-to-evolve","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/msc-interoperability-crucial-for-container-shipping-to-evolve\/1758\/","title":{"rendered":"MSC: Interoperability Crucial for Container Shipping to Evolve"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Interoperability will be a key element for the container shipping industry to transform and adapt to the digital era, according to Swiss-based shipping major Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MSC is one of the four founders of the Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA) that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/worldmaritimenews.com\/archives\/275156\/liner-giants-form-digital-container-shipping-association\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was officially established<\/a>&nbsp;in April this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together with Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd and Ocean Network Express (ONE), MSC wants to create common information technology standards to make the industry more efficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>World Maritime News spoke to Andre Simha, Chief Information Officer of MSC, on the container shipping industry\u2019s response to DCSA since the partners&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/worldmaritimenews.com\/archives\/264843\/simha-our-association-will-be-industrys-collective-voice-on-it-issues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first announced<\/a>&nbsp;the cooperation on the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cMSC has had extremely positive feedback from customers and vendors and DCSA itself has felt good vibes from a number of different carriers,\u201d&nbsp;<\/em>Simharevealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe industry realizes that the initiative behind the DCSA is necessary in order to help all actors in the supply chain to become more efficient and improve interoperability.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cIndeed, we predict that within a couple of years everyone will become more familiar with this word, which signifies such a crucial element of how we need to evolve as an industry:&nbsp;<strong>interoperability<\/strong>,\u201d<\/em>Simha, who is also the Chairman of DCSA, pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specifically, the ultimate goals of the newly created association include simplification, efficiency for all and interoperability at various levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking about the future of shipping and what the industry needs to change to get there, Simha said that the future&nbsp;<em>\u201cis really all about collaboration and simplification of some of the outdated processes in the industry.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that standardizing&nbsp;the way in which we communicate with others in the industry is, in part, the way to achieve this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/worldmaritimenews.com\/archives\/275794\/dcsa-digital-standards-will-not-rule-out-customization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Related:&nbsp;<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/worldmaritimenews.com\/archives\/275794\/dcsa-digital-standards-will-not-rule-out-customization\/\">Digital Standards Will Not Rule Out Customization<\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked about the association\u2019s plans on how to incentivize standardization besides the likely benefit of speeding up operations, Simha replied:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe advantage of having major carriers on board is that we can ensure that the standards we create or adopt are actually implemented. This is the weak point of some of the other associations that do not have the capacity to implement their standards.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI believe part of the argument on standardization has already been won, among those who will be closest to the implementation of new digital industry standards, and I personally have been making the case for some time now. The DCSA will help to raise awareness of the benefits across a wider audience,\u201d&nbsp;<\/em>he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As explained by Simha, digitalization means many things to many people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cAt its core, it is all about revisiting tedious processes and where possible simplifying them and automating some to improve execution speed and allow staff to focus on better service to our customers,\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;according to Simha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to challenges in digitalization of business operations from MSC\u2019s view, Simha noted:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI have been through many different types and phases of digitalization over three decades of my career. The challenges today have crystallized as the necessity for digital standards.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cAs a carrier, MSC plans to ensure that the standards that the DCSA will embrace from existing initiatives, or produce afresh, will be implemented by MSC as a carrier,\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;he further said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As previously announced, the association has no intention to develop or operate any digital platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s more about ensuring that the \u2018new\u2019 digital collaboration platforms have the appropriate standards to begin with and ensure interoperability between them and the other actors in the supply chain.
