{"id":16799,"date":"2020-09-03T08:50:16","date_gmt":"2020-09-03T05:50:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/ssi-cbs-maritime-to-define-sustainability-criteria-for-marine-fuels\/16799\/"},"modified":"2020-09-03T08:50:16","modified_gmt":"2020-09-03T05:50:16","slug":"ssi-cbs-maritime-to-define-sustainability-criteria-for-marine-fuels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/ssi-cbs-maritime-to-define-sustainability-criteria-for-marine-fuels\/16799\/","title":{"rendered":"SSI, CBS Maritime to define sustainability criteria for marine fuels"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.offshorewind.biz\/file\/sites\/6\/2020\/09\/02111824\/shipping-illustration-1024x623.jpg\" alt=\"Shipping\" class=\"wp-image-383796\" \/><figcaption>Illustration; Image by Navingo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"has-intro-font-size\">The\u00a0Sustainable Shipping Initiative\u00a0(SSI) and Copenhagen Business School (CBS) Maritime have set up a new partnership with the aim of defining the sustainability criteria of the alternative fuels under consideration for shipping&#8217;s decarbonisation and their certification.<\/p>\n<p>As explained, no sustainability standard nor related certification scheme currently exists for marine fuels.<\/p>\n<p>Once developed, SSI\u00a0and CBS Maritime\u2019s partnership will apply these criteria to assess the alternative fuels currently being explored for zero-emission shipping. <\/p>\n<p>The criteria are also expected to be fed into a number of decarbonisation initiatives across the maritime and energy sectors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>SSI\u00a0plans to subsequently engage with certification bodies to facilitate the development of a sustainability standard or certification scheme for marine fuels.<\/p>\n<p>The collaboration is carried out under the Green Shipping Project, an international research partnership managed jointly by CBS Maritime and the Centre for Transportation Studies at the University of British Columbia\u2019s (UBC) Sauder School of Business in Vancouver. <\/p>\n<p>The project was launched in 2017 and is\u00a0a collaboration of 18 universities and 19 government, industry, and NGO partners. It is focused on\u00a0five areas of research: Trade and Logistics; Green Ports; Innovation; Stakeholders; and Value Chains.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cToday, we have no clarity nor consensus on the sustainability issues surrounding the fuels being explored for shipping\u2019s decarbonisation, and the criteria to assess their sustainability remain undefined. This work will contribute to this debate and ultimately, inform the selection of one or more winning options for zero-emission shipping,\u201d <\/em><strong>Andrew Stephens<\/strong>, Executive Director at\u00a0SSI\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<p><em>We believe that university-industry collaboration is critically important for the achievement of sustainable growth and industry transformation, commercialization and competitiveness, as well for the advancement of academia and higher education.
