Lawyers for the captain argued that the charges do not hold water and should be thrown out, according to French media <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lexpress.mu\/article\/382059\/en-cour-capitaine-mv-wakashio-reclame-radiation-laccusation\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>They prosecution is expected to respond in court September 8.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The MV Wakashio ran aground off Mauritius\u2019s Pointe d\u2019Esny on July 25, 2020. The capesize bulk carrier, which was unladen at the time, was initially reported stable, but after days of pounding surf it began to break up, resulting in a breach of a bunker tank on August 6.\u00a0An estimated 1,000 metric tons of oil was released into the environment before crews were able to plug the leak and remove any additional oil on board, according to the shipowner and manager, Nagashiki Shipping Co. of Japan.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The bow of the vessel has since been towed out to sea and scuttled.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The Captain and Chief Officer of the Wakashio were eventually arrested by the Mauritius Police Force on August 18.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The Maritime Union of India has <a href=\"http:\/\/ptinews.com\/news\/11759508_Maritime-body-MUI-seeks-support-for-fair-trial-of-MV-Wakashio-Captain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">called on relevant authorities<\/a> for a fair trial of the captain as public outrage over the grounding and government response to the incident grows.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMUI\u2019s communication has requested these bodies to investigate the arrest of Capt Sunil Nandeshwar in Mauritius and conduct his judicial trial in the local Court abiding the guidelines laid by \u2018International Maritime Organization\u2019 and without bowing to any political, governmental or corporate pressure,\u201d the statement dated August 27 said.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCapt Sunil Nandeshwar has had an incident-free career in the merchant navy for over 40 years, and around 25 years in command as ship\u2019s Captain. He has successfully completed over 100 voyages across the globe till-date,\u201d said MUI General Secretary Amar Singh Thakur.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Captain Nandeshwar remains in custody in Mauritius.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The chief officer,\u00a0Tilak Ratna Suboda, a Sri Lankan, faces similar charges.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>MUI said that the it will continue to provide assistance in the matter to ensure justice to Indian seafarers.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, the charterer of the Wakashio, said it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mol.co.jp\/en\/pr\/2020\/20051.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has established<\/a> a specialized team and sent supplies to Mauritius to help assist with the clean-up.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>AIS ship tracking data from Wakashio\u2019s fateful voyage shows the ship <a href=\"https:\/\/gcaptain.com\/wakashio-deviated-from-shipping-lane-before-mauritius-grounding\/\">deviated from the normal shipping lane<\/a> by about 55 nautical miles and crashed directly into the island.
