According to U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) data, as of 10 July 2020, there are 67 ships with 14,702 crew onboard.<\/p>\n<p>On cruise ships, passengers and crew share spaces that are more crowded than most urban settings. Even when only essential crew are on board, ongoing spread of COVID-19 still occurs. <\/p>\n<p>If unrestricted cruise ship passenger operations were permitted to resume, passengers and crew on board would be at increased risk of COVID-19 infection and those that work or travel on cruise ships would place substantial unnecessary risk on healthcare workers, port personnel and federal partners, and the communities they return to, CDC further said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inc-core-heading\">\n<h3>Cruise lines coping with losses, speeding up vessel sales<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p>Starting in March, cruise lines around the globe suspended sailings due to travelling restrictions imposed by governments aimed at minimising the spread of the coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>Voyage cancellations and prolonged vessel layups have been negatively affecting cruise companies&#8217; earnings. <\/p>\n<p>In the quarter ended 31 May 2020, Carnival Corporation &amp; plc., the world\u2019s largest cruise company and the owner of Carnival Cruise Line brand, suffered <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"a net loss of $4.4 billion (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.offshore-energy.biz\/carnival-corp-posts-4-4-billion-loss-starts-selling-ships-to-cut-costs\/\" target=\"_blank\">a net loss of $4.4 billion<\/a> due to the suspension of cruise operations.<\/p>\n<p>Royal Caribbean Cruises, another cruise line giant, announced earlier this year\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.offshore-energy.biz\/royal-caribbean-axes-5000-jobs-amid-prolonged-cruise-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\">major job cuts<\/a>\u00a0amid the impact of the coronavirus on its business, targeting over 5,000 US employees. In late March, the cruise company also secured\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.offshore-energy.biz\/royal-caribbean-secures-usd-2-2-bn-loan-to-bolster-liquidity\/\" target=\"_blank\">a $2.2 billion loan<\/a>\u00a0to boost its liquidity position.<\/p>\n<p>Cruise lines are implementing different measures in an effort to reduce operating expenses and improve liquidity. One of such measures is disposing of older vessels.<\/p>\n<p>Carnival Corp. recently announced its plans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.offshore-energy.biz\/carnival-removing-13-ships-from-its-fleet-delaying-delivery-of-16-newbuilds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"to offload thirteen ships (opens in a new tab)\">to offload thirteen ships<\/a> from its fleet through demolition and sales to curb the impact of the health crisis.<\/p>\n<p>In late June, Carnival&#8217;s Costa Cruises sold its <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"1996-built cruise ship Costa Victoria (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.offshore-energy.biz\/carnival-cruise-ship-sold-for-recycling\/\" target=\"_blank\">1996-built cruise ship Costa Victoria<\/a> for demolition in Italy. <\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, Carnival&#8217;s Holland America Line also announced that four of its ships &#8212; the 2000-built Amsterdam, the 1993-built Maasdam, the 1997-built Rotterdam and the 1996-built Veendam &#8212; will be leaving the fleet and transferring to new owners.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.offshorewind.biz\/file\/sites\/6\/2020\/07\/17112459\/2020-07-17_11-23-56.png\" alt=\"Amsterdam\" class=\"wp-image-375773\" \/><figcaption> MS Amsterdam in Seattle.
