{"id":13784,"date":"2020-07-17T10:30:21","date_gmt":"2020-07-17T07:30:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/port-of-helsinki-gets-eu-support-for-green-investment-projects\/13784\/"},"modified":"2020-07-17T10:30:21","modified_gmt":"2020-07-17T07:30:21","slug":"port-of-helsinki-gets-eu-support-for-green-investment-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/port-of-helsinki-gets-eu-support-for-green-investment-projects\/13784\/","title":{"rendered":"Port of Helsinki gets EU support for green investment projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>Finland&#8217;s Port of Helsinki has received financial support from the EU for port investment projects on the Helsinki\u2013Tallinn and Helsinki\u2013Travem\u00fcnde routes, as well as for installing an onshore power system for the Hernesaari cruise services.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As explained, the investments focus on making the ports more environmentally friendly and efficient.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.offshorewind.biz\/file\/sites\/6\/2020\/07\/17090901\/2020-07-17_09-08-07.png\" alt=\"Port of Helsinki\" class=\"wp-image-375705\" \/><figcaption>Image Courtesy: Port of Helsinki Ltd.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Overall, the EU has granted \u20ac10 million for the Helsinki and Tallinn ports\u00a0TWIN-PORT IV\u00a0project. The investment in the Port of Helsinki is approximately \u20ac11.3 million in total, with funding of approximately \u20ac3.4 million. Funding was granted especially for the purpose of improving the onshore power systems and efficiency in ports, the automation of ship docking and the ramp arrangements in the Vuosaari\u2013Muuga route.<\/p>\n<p>What is more, around \u20ac3.3 million of new EU funding has been granted to the\u00a0Hansalink II\u00a0project of Helsinki and L\u00fcbeck ports and the city of L\u00fcbeck. In Vuosaari, the total cost of the project\u2019s shore power and automation investment is approximately \u20ac2.3 million, with funding of approximately \u20ac0.7 million.<\/p>\n<p>The most central international cruise harbours in the Baltic Sea are involved in the\u00a0Cruise\u00a0OPS\u00a0project to create a uniform onshore power system that reduces exhaust emissions and noise pollution during port calls. It is estimated that the Port of Helsinki will pay \u20ac4.2 million for the onshore power system planned for Hernesaari, which has received funding of \u20ac0.9 million.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe are extremely pleased with the funding we have received. This shows that our development projects run in parallel with the EU\u2019s environmental and efficiency view on mobility and transport\u201d,<\/em>\u00a0<strong>Pekka Meronen<\/strong>, Vice President in charge of Finance, ICT and Development at Port of Helsinki Ltd, commented.<\/p>\n<p>Previous Twin-Port and Hansalink projects have built and developed the port infrastructure and shipping companies\u2019 fleets in Helsinki, Tallinn and L\u00fcbeck, as well as enabled RoRo lines in Muuga\u2013Vuosaari. <\/p>\n<p>In addition, Tallink&#8217;s passenger ferry <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"MS Megastar (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.offshore-energy.biz\/tallink-welcomes-new-lng-powered-ferry-megastar\/\" target=\"_blank\">MS Megastar<\/a>, which uses liquefied natural gas (LNG), began operating on the Tallinn\u2013Helsinki sea route in 2017. Tallink has ordered another LNG-powered fast ferry which will be similar to the group&#8217;s Megastar. In 2019, a total of 12.2 million passengers travelled through the Port of Helsinki. The Port of Helsinki is also Finland\u2019s leading general port for foreign trade.
