The investment in the new facilities will increase the port\u2019s capacity to handle general cargo traffic by around 9 million tonnes a year, and also will help alleviate port congestion. In addition, larger ships will be able to berth at the port, thereby reducing transportation costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two multi-purpose berths, which total 300m in length with a draft alongside of 13m, have been constructed at a cost of around US$ 40 million, and are designed for vessels up to 75,000dwt. Each berth also has a backup area of 21 hectares.
