{"id":12782,"date":"2020-07-02T08:09:25","date_gmt":"2020-07-02T05:09:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/doeksens-first-lng-powered-ferry-enters-service\/12782\/"},"modified":"2020-07-02T08:09:25","modified_gmt":"2020-07-02T05:09:25","slug":"doeksens-first-lng-powered-ferry-enters-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/doeksens-first-lng-powered-ferry-enters-service\/12782\/","title":{"rendered":"Doeksen\u2019s first LNG-powered ferry enters service"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dutch ferry operator Rederij Doeksen said its first liquefied natural gas-powered ferry, Willem Barentsz, will start its service on Friday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.offshorewind.biz\/file\/sites\/6\/2020\/07\/01221707\/Doeksens-first-LNG-powered-ferry-to-enter-service-1024x681.jpg\" alt=\"Willem Barentsz\" class=\"wp-image-372116\" \/><figcaption>Willem Barentsz (Image: Rederij Doeksen)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The ship will operate on the Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage site. <\/p>\n<p>It will work on the ferry connection to Dutch islands of Terschelling and Vlieland.<\/p>\n<p>The BMT-designed LNG catamaran is the first out of two 70-meter sister vessels featuring Rolls-Royce\u00a0twin MTU gas engines.<\/p>\n<p>The two new vessels will each have the capacity to transport up to 600 passengers and 64 cars across the Wadden Sea. <\/p>\n<p>Strategic Marine shipyard in Vietnam built both of the ships while Doeksen completed final outfiting and commissioning.<\/p>\n<p>According to Doeksen, the second ship, Willem de Vlamingh, will follow in September.<\/p>\n<p>The company says that these ships are the first Dutch single-fuel LNG-powered ferries.<\/p>\n<p>Doeksen also claims that these ferries are the world&#8217;s first ships with single-fuel LNG engines that can drive a fixed propeller directly.<\/p>\n<p>The IMO Tier III and EU stage V compliant engines each deliver 1,492 kW, enabling the vessels to reach cruising speeds of 14 knots.    <\/p>\n<p>Emissions from the LNG engines fall &#8220;considerably below&#8221; the current IMO III limits.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the engine emits no sulfur oxides and only very small quantities of nitrogen oxide, Doeksen said.<\/p>\n<p>The shipping company plans to reduce CO2 emissions even more.<\/p>\n<p>It aims to achive this by &#8220;blending standard LNG with bio-LNG or LBG as soon as this type of fuel becomes sufficiently available&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The post <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.offshore-energy.biz\/doeksens-first-lng-powered-ferry-enters-service\/\">Doeksen&#8217;s first LNG-powered ferry enters service<\/a> appeared first on <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.offshore-energy.biz\">Offshore Energy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>world maritime news<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dutch ferry operator Rederij Doeksen said its first liquefied natural gas-powered ferry, Willem Barentsz, will start its service on Friday.
