The\u00a0Baltic\u00a0<\/span>Exchange’s main sea freight\u00a0index\u00a0<\/span>edged higher on Friday, helped by an uptick in rates for capesize and panamax vessels, and posted a sixth consecutive weekly gain.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Baltic\u00a0<\/span>dry\u00a0index<\/span>, which tracks rates for ships ferrying dry bulk commodities and reflects rates for capesize, panamax and supramax vessels, gained 11 points, or 0.6%, to 1,749 and rose 12.5% this week.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The\u00a0index\u00a0<\/span>has surged about 60% so far this year and has recouped losses brought about by the coronavirus pandemic that sapped demand for vessels.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Baltic\u00a0<\/span>capesize\u00a0index\u00a0<\/span>inched up by 6 points, to 4,218, and recorded its fourth straight weekly rise, gaining 8.1%.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Average daily earnings for capesizes, which typically transport cargoes of 170,000 tonnes to 180,000 tonnes, including iron ore and coal, rose by $246 to $29,641.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The panamax\u00a0index\u00a0<\/span>was up by 3 points at 1,256, its highest since December 19.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Average daily earnings for panamaxes, which usually carry coal or grain cargoes of about 60,000 tonnes to 70,000 tonnes, rose $33 to $11,306.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The supramax\u00a0index\u00a0<\/span>was unchanged at 678.<\/p>\n
