{"id":12198,"date":"2020-06-23T18:45:57","date_gmt":"2020-06-23T15:45:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/white-house-trade-advisor-walks-back-comments-on-china-trade-deal-being-over\/12198\/"},"modified":"2020-06-23T18:45:57","modified_gmt":"2020-06-23T15:45:57","slug":"white-house-trade-advisor-walks-back-comments-on-china-trade-deal-being-over","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/white-house-trade-advisor-walks-back-comments-on-china-trade-deal-being-over\/12198\/","title":{"rendered":"White House Trade Advisor Walks Back Comments on China Trade Deal Being \u2018Over\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p>WASHINGTON, June 22 (Reuters) \u2013 White House trade adviser Peter Navarro on Monday walked back on his earlier remarks that the U.S.-China trade pact was \u201cover,\u201d stoking volatility in markets already frazzled by the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Navarro said his comments were taken \u201cwildly out of context,\u201d while U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed in a tweet the deal with China was \u201cfully intact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHopefully they will continue to live up to the terms of the agreement,\u201d Trump said on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Earlier, Navarro told Fox News \u201cit\u2019s over\u201d in an interview when asked about the trade agreement.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>He said the \u201cturning point\u201d came when the United States learned about the spreading coronavirus only after a Chinese delegation had left Washington following the signing of the Phase 1 deal on Jan. 15.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was at a time when they had already sent hundreds of thousands of people to this country to spread that virus, and it was just minutes after wheels up when that plane took off that we began to hear about this pandemic,\u201d Navarro said.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\" type=\"ce15925512ed59c31a8c86a8-text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>China on Tuesday responded to Navarro\u2019s claims about the trade deal with disdain.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe consistently lies and has no honesty and trustworthiness,\u201d foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told reporters at a regular press briefing.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>As for the trade deal, Zhao said: \u201cChina\u2019s stance on the issue has been consistent and clear.\u201d He directed specific questions to relevant departments.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Financial markets were choppy, with U.S. stock futures initially turning negative and risk-sensitive currencies including the Australian dollar falling.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>They have since recovered much of the lost ground after Navarro, one of the most outspoken critics of China among Trump\u2019s senior advisers, issued a statement saying his comments \u201chave been taken wildly out of context.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey had nothing at all to do with the Phase I trade deal, which continues in place. I was simply speaking to the lack of trust we now have of the Chinese Communist Party after they lied about the origins of the China virus and foisted a pandemic upon the world,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The U.S.-China trade negotiations lasted more than two years, heaped tariffs on $370 billion of Chinese products, whipsawed financial markets and dented global growth well before the coronavirus outbreak triggered a worldwide recession.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>U.S.-China relations have reached their lowest point in years since the coronavirus pandemic that began in China hit the United States hard.
