{"id":10731,"date":"2020-05-30T06:06:59","date_gmt":"2020-05-30T03:06:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/apl-england-master-charged-over-loss-of-containers-off-sydney\/10731\/"},"modified":"2020-05-30T06:06:59","modified_gmt":"2020-05-30T03:06:59","slug":"apl-england-master-charged-over-loss-of-containers-off-sydney","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.al-sindbad.net\/apl-england-master-charged-over-loss-of-containers-off-sydney\/10731\/","title":{"rendered":"APL England Master Charged Over Loss of Containers Off Sydney"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p>The offenses relate to pollution and\/or damage of the Australian marine environment as a result of poor cargo loading, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>AMSA General Manager Operations Allan Schwartz said laying charges against the ship\u2019s Master were not taken lightly.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis and other incidents remind us of the important role the ship\u2019s Master has in ensuring the ships that ply our waters are operated safely and do not damage our marine environment,\u201d said Schwartz.\u00a0\u201cToday\u2019s actions should not detract from the responsibility of the ship owner APL Singapore, insurer Steamship Mutual, and operator ANL who remain accountable for remediation of any impacts of this incident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The APL England itself was detained at the\u00a0Port of Brisbane on Wednesday night.\u00a0Schwartz said previously that the authority\u2019s inspection of the ship had already revealed that lashing arrangements for cargo were inadequate and securing points for containers on the deck of the ship were heavily corroded.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese findings constitute a clear breach of a requirement under SOLAS to ensure that a ship and its equipment are maintained so as not to present a risk to the safety of the ship itself or anyone on board the ship,\u201d Schwartz said.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>As was reported previously, the APL England <a href=\"https:\/\/gcaptain.com\/apl-containership-loses-containers-off-australia\/\">lost about 40 containers<\/a> overboard during heavy weather off Sydney. Australian authorities later revised the number to 50 lost containers.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The ship will remain under detention in the Port of Brisbane and would not be released until its deficiencies have been rectified.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs of today, AMSA has placed an additional requirement on the owner of the ship under the Protection of the Seas Act which must be met before the ship will be released from detention,\u201d Schwartz said on Friday.\u00a0\u201cThis action seeks financial security from the insurers in the order of $22 million. This provides a commitment that they will remediate all impacts of this incident.
